{"id":1312,"date":"2011-08-23T21:29:58","date_gmt":"2011-08-23T21:29:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.virginiaknight.org.uk\/vhkssinging\/?p=1312"},"modified":"2015-10-07T15:47:37","modified_gmt":"2015-10-07T15:47:37","slug":"prom-42-swan-lake","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.virginiaknight.org.uk\/vhkssinging\/2011\/08\/23\/prom-42-swan-lake\/","title":{"rendered":"Prom 42: Swan Lake"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Some others in the family went to hear Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra perform <em>Swan Lake <\/em>at the Proms &#8211; my elder son&#8217;s first Promenade concert.<\/p>\n<p>This went down well.\u00a0 We have a recording of the complete score, but it seems to me to have its <em>longeurs<\/em> which would in the theatre be covered by dancing.\u00a0 On the other hand a suite of highlights can be abrupt and seem too much like &#8216;greatest hits&#8217;.\u00a0 The Mariinsky&#8217;s performing version, used at this concert, came out somewhere between the two and avoided these traps.\u00a0 (I was following the concert at home on the radio).<\/p>\n<p>The performance had one or two slips but I was assured that these didn&#8217;t matter because of the verve and idiomatic approach of the Russian performers.\u00a0 And the Eastern European brass sound (a feature of many of the LPs I&#8217;ve been putting on CD) is not extinct in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Guardian<\/em>&#8216;s review can be found <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/music\/2011\/aug\/16\/prom42-mariinsky-orchestra-gergiev-review\" onclick=\"__gaTracker('send', 'event', 'outbound-article', 'http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/music\/2011\/aug\/16\/prom42-mariinsky-orchestra-gergiev-review', 'here');\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some others in the family went to hear Gergiev and the Mariinsky Theatre orchestra perform Swan Lake at the Proms &#8211; my elder son&#8217;s first Promenade concert.
