{"id":1300,"date":"2011-07-21T12:39:42","date_gmt":"2011-07-21T12:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.virginiaknight.org.uk\/vhkssinging\/?p=1300"},"modified":"2018-11-24T22:12:41","modified_gmt":"2018-11-24T22:12:41","slug":"liszts-chaotic-pendulum","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.virginiaknight.org.uk\/vhkssinging\/2011\/07\/21\/liszts-chaotic-pendulum\/","title":{"rendered":"Liszt&#8217;s chaotic pendulum"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second half of the Chandos Singers&#8217; concert opened with a <i>Salve Regina<\/i> by Liszt.\u00a0 The rules governing the length of each beat, we were told, were very complex and the net effect on the beat was rather like that of physical laws on a chaotic pendulum &#8211; unpredictable to the casual viewer, so no choice but to watch!<\/p>\n<p>Our first half was based around Victoria&#8217;s Mass <i>Ave Regina caelorum<\/i> (just 8 parts this time) and there were several other settings of the text on the programme.\u00a0 One was by a medi&aelig;val composer I hadn&#8217;t encountered before, Leonel Power, in which I was part of a semi-chorus.\u00a0 Other pieces included a substantial psalm setting by Sch&uuml;tz, <i>Ich hebe meine Augen auf<\/i> and <i>Turn thee unto me<\/i> by Boyce.
